The historic Rex Theater, with its Art Deco styling, is the prototypical small town movie theater. The original movie poster cases, display windows, and ticket booth remain as they were in years past as does the marquee above the entrance. Many of the original fixtures and equipment still remain in the Rex, including the 1937 Carbon-arc movie projectors. The arc generated so much heat that each projector had its own chimney to pass the heat to the outdoors. The projection room remains much as it was when the last movie was shown. The Rex continues to be an integral part of the Galax community. WBRF 98.1 FM located in Galax broadcasts its live “Blue Ridge Backroads” Radio Show every Friday night. Also, the Theater is constantly in demand for special events. The Rex Theater is the only surviving theater in the downtown.
