1920 & 1910
The current one story building was constructed in 1910. This combined building retains much of its historic integrity, featuring large storefront windows, entrance door with molding and corbelled brick along the upper facade. In the early years, Fred Carter established Galax’ first modern steam dry cleaning shop at this address. Originally named Fred Carter Dry Cleaning Shop, it went through several owners and name changes including: Threatt’s Dry Cleaners and Galax Dry Cleaning Shop. The City Barber shop was located in the older right-hand part of the building. The barber shop had the only public bath in Galax. There was also a shoe shine boy who apparently was quite a showman. One could get a song and dance along with the shine. The two addresses were consolidated into a single store in the 90s.
